This episode of the Bro, What a Week vlog combines a bit of video with healthy dose of low light photography. I am continuing to mine the wealth of activity at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City so I decided to head over to the fireworks show for the Pioneer Day celebration.

It was beautiful evening and I was able to shoot a bit with the 300mm Nikon on the Sony NEX6 as the sun set (You can figure out the crop factor with a bunch of math when shooting with big lenses on a smaller mirror less camera - or you can look through the view finder shoot what you see, I do the latter). As the evening went on and I had to start pushing the ISO and slowing the shutter speed I dropped down to my Sony kit lens and shot pretty much wide open.

I knew I wanted to play with the Bulb setting and long exposures for the fireworks show so I started familiarizing myself with the controls as I did some crowd shot in the increasing darkness. This had some very fun results and led to the theme for the entire video. I was also very happy i was able to get it dialed in before it became completely dark and the fireworks were coming thick and fast. I think a remote shutter button is in my future as I shook the camera upon releasing the button a few times.

State holiday, Pioneer Day (AKA “Pie and Beer Day” by the hipsters) in Utah is a celebration of the first white settlers in the Salt Lake basin. Firework displays rival the 4th of July displays earlier in the month, and Liberty Park hosts the largest show in Salt Lake City.
